Résumé du projet
The proposed research project aims to investigate, develop and implement innovative methods for protecting wooden shipwrecks in situ, in high biodeterioration dynamic environments such as the Eastern Mediterranean. The 13th century shipwreck in Rhodes harbour and the Spanish shipwreck of the C16th in the port of Zakynthos will provide effective and applicable solutions for protecting shipwrecks in both low and high energy underwater environments. Furthermore, it aims to contribute to the evolution of Mediterranean and Greek nautical archaeology, by providing new insights into shipbuilding, naval technology and maritime trade during the Middle Ages. Moreover, it aims to train postgraduate students of underwater archaeology and conservation, in new methodological approaches and give them access to future interdisciplinary collaborations. Finally it aims to awaken public awareness on issues related to protection and management of Underwater Cultural Heritage through innovative museographic and educational initiatives.
